Welcome to Danny, Clare, Oisin and Katies website about their visit to South Africa in August 2005. All the photographs were taken by the Cooke family members and as far as possible appear in chronological order.

Everything in RED is a link to another website with more information about that topic. At the end of each item is a link back to the main 34 Degrees South site should you wish to return there. Also at the end of each item you will notice the word COMMENTS, if you click this, a box opens up, if you select anonymous you can leave a comment about that item, which will be available for everyone to see. You will notice that before the word 'comments' is a number, this indicates how many comments have been left regarding that item and by clicking that number the comments can be viewed. Again at the end of each item and next to the word 'comments' you will see a small envelope icon, if you click this it opens another box, and if you follow the instructions you can email that item to another person who you may think will be interested in its contents.

In the words of Nelson Mandela, ' friendship and support from friends is something which is a source of tremendous inspiration always and to everyone'. Please enjoy the Cookes Visit.

    Downhill Adventures

On Sunday 21st August Danny, Oisin, Luke and Amie went sandboarding at a place called Atlantis about 45 minutes drive from our house in Hout Bay. The weather was not perfect, however they were given some good instruction and before long everyone was sandboarding like experts, albeit in a straight line.

It was generally agreed that it was a lot slower than doing it on snow, and as we found out the more wet the sand became the slower it became. Danny sported the very latest in boarding fashions, knee length red soaks and a long white t shirt, it actually managed to improve his boarding skills.

Oisin was the only person to have snowboarded before and so instantly became the expert and someone to watch on the slopes, not just for his boarding skills but for his superior dress sense compared to his dad.

Luke as a skaeboard of some years also cut a dash down the slopes, both on and off the board as he became expert at rolling down the slopes on his side.

Amie managed to come down with a lot of grace however stopping was another matter all together.

The day was through a Cape Town adventure company called Downhill Adventures and cost R350 for half a day. We have found out that we can get a day pass to go into Atlantis for R9 and so will be doing it on our own in future. That said the instruction they received was very good and everyone was boarding quickly.
